After Care NextGen — Parent FAQ
Will my child be forced to talk?
No. Children and teens are never pressured to share. They are allowed to participate at their comfort level. Many begin by listening, and as they feel safe, they naturally open up over time.
Is this therapy or counseling?
After Care NextGen is not clinical therapy. It is a guided emotional support program that provides coping tools, structured activities, and faith-based encouragement in a safe group setting.
Who is this program for?
This program is for children and teens ages 6–17 who are experiencing grief, loss, separation, or major life changes. This may include the loss of a loved one, divorce, an absent or incarcerated parent, foster care changes, or sudden family transitions.
What will my child actually do during meetings?
Participants take part in age-appropriate activities designed to help them understand and express emotions in a healthy way. Activities may include guided discussion, journaling, creative expression, coping exercises, and encouragement through positive affirmations and prayer.
My child doesn’t want to talk about their feelings. Should I still enroll them?
Yes. Many young people struggle to communicate emotions, especially after loss or change. The program is designed to gently help them process feelings without pressure. Even listening and observing can be helpful in the beginning.
How are age groups separated?
Children are placed into two groups:
Kids Circle (ages 6–11) and Teen Safe Space (ages 12–17).
This allows discussions and activities to be appropriate for their developmental level.
Will parents receive updates?
Yes. Parents receive general updates and guidance on how to support their child at home. Private details shared by participants are respected to maintain trust and emotional safety.
How long does the program last?
After Care NextGen runs in monthly sessions that meet once a week. Families may continue as long as support is beneficial.
Is faith included?
Yes. Gentle, optional faith-based encouragement and prayer are offered in a respectful and comforting way. Children are never pressured and participation is always voluntary.
What if my child needs more help than a group setting?
If a child appears to need clinical therapy or specialized care, parents will be encouraged to seek a licensed mental health professional. After Care NextGen works best as a support program and can complement professional counseling.
What are the goals of the program?
Our goals are to help youth:
• Understand their emotions
• Learn healthy coping skills
• Feel safe expressing feelings
• Reduce behavior changes related to grief
